Chapter Twenty

Chicago was three days away, with shows scheduled every day in between. Beth Ann started to crave her own bed and a little more privacy. Attempting to sleep on the bus wore her down, and the lack of solitude didn’t improve her overall mood. Some in the group were getting as cranky as Lenard did without coffee. If Cindy, one of the dancers, didn’t get her cup, everyone including Mitch ran for cover.

Fortunately, they’d get four days off once they hit Chicago so the stagehands could improve the production, props, lighting etc. The company paid for the cast to stay in one of the finest hotels in the city while the work was being done. Mitch said they would each get a suite. Beth Ann had heard Chicago was an exciting town to explore and couldn’t wait to get there.

When they were still three days out, Mitch called her over to sit by him on the bus. She got up from her very comfortable seat and plopped down next to him.

“How are ya, kid?”

“Good,” she answered. “I miss my friends, my family, and my bed. A little peace and quiet and better food would be nice. Other than that I’m peachy.”

He took off his reading glasses and closed the magazine he’d been reading, his left eyebrow raised questioningly. “Speaking of friends, I got a call about you from some kid named Blake Tanner. He caught me right when we were leaving the show the night you went with your dad. I got sidetracked with that little backstage spat and forgot to tell you.”

“That’s okay. It’s easy to forget when you have a couple of people fighting. Did he tell you what he wanted?” She tried to sound casual. “By the way, he’s not a kid. He’s twenty-five.”

“Oh, well okay. The old man said he wants to meet up with you. You haven’t had any visitors besides your dad since we hit the road. I think it’d be good for you to spend some time with a friend. He seemed very excited to see you.”

She nodded. “Yeah, it would be nice to see someone from home.”

“Was this guy an old boyfriend or something?” Mitch raised both eyebrows this time.

“No, Kaylob was the only boyfriend I ever had.”

“You’re kidding. Really, kid?”

She shrugged, a little embarrassed. “Kaylob was the only guy I ever dated because we fell in love almost at first sight when we were just kids. Blake Tanner ... well, I did have a crush on him, but my heart belonged to Kaylob.”

She felt a shadow cross over her after her comment. Looking out the window, she thought about the jungle and Kaylob’s voice. Then she thought about Blake, the all-American boy, so handsome and rich. He’d been a star football player that all the girls had loved. Yet none of them had known the truth about Mr. Tanner, the secrets he’d shared with no one. If only he would have let her help him back then. She had tried more than once.
